Custody exchange days can be stressful because they involve direct interaction between divorced spouses, especially immediately after the divorce. Even if you and your ex-spouse went through a peaceful divorce, it can be challenging seeing them while also dealing with the shift in parenting time.
Preparing for transitions can make the experience more manageable for you and your co-parent. Here are three ways to prepare:
Choose a regular day and time
Depending on your custody schedule, choose an exchange day that considers your child’s age and school schedule and your work schedules. Once you have selected a day, stick to it. You should also choose a regular time for exchange. This can help eliminate confusion in your child, as they know when they need to be leaving for the other home.
Pick a location
You and your co-parent can pick up and drop off your child at each other’s homes. However, if you are not comfortable going to your ex’s house, you can use a neutral location, such as a restaurant, parking lot, public park or mall. Your child should feel secure in the location you choose. It can also help if there are activities they can engage in while waiting for the other parent.
If you have transitions on school days, you can use the school as an exchange location. One parent drops off the child, and the other one picks them up after school.
Request changes earlier
If you want to request a schedule change, let your co-parent know about it earlier. For instance, if you have an emergency that makes it impossible for you to be at the exchange location on time, communicate this soon so your co-parent can make adjustments. You don’t want to keep them waiting for hours.
Due to the likelihood of conflicts on custody exchange days, it can be beneficial to be adequately prepared. Learn more to have successful co-parenting.
